Victorian style dining room refurbishment

Customer requirements:Take their dining room back to its original Victorian splendour by adding rich colour and transforming it into a beautiful and striking living space. We needed to enhance the original features in order to help take the dining room back in time.

Where possible antique furniture was used in our renovation.

In a bid to enhance the scheme, part of the brief was to use as many items as possible from within the large four-bedroom Victorian house.

We chose a red colour scheme for the walls; a popular colour for dining rooms throughout the Victorian period.

Summary of tasks:

• The original wooden floor needed cleaning and polishing
• Crumbling walls needed to be re plastered
• A great deal of preparation was also needed on the woodwork and ceiling
• Neglected plants, were replaced by realistic period artificial plants that needed no care
• Dining table was reduced to its standard size to allow more space in the room
• The dated full-length curtains and fabric pelmet were replaced with a neat tapestry roman blind, which enhanced the beauty of the sash window
• The tapestry fabric was also used on the chair cushion and table decoration, which opens out to a runner when the table is extended
• Our customer wanted to hang her original artworks on a chain from the picture rail; it was difficult to find an identical replacement chain - the original had broken links, but a substitute was eventually found
• Antique accessories were sourced and purchased to complete the period style
• New electrical sockets were installed and original ones replaced with ones of a period design
• New radiator was installed to replace old leaking one
• New opulent armchair was purchased to enhance the corner by the fire where the new Tiffany table lamp was displayed
• New Tiffany floor lamp was also purchased to illuminate the corner adjacent to the sideboard to create a luxurious appearance
